초록
This paper first discusses the issue of what drives movement and adopts Bošcović’s Greed view that the motivation for Move lies in the moving element, not in the target. Bošcović tries to combine this view of Move with the single probe hypothesis which dictates that an expression can probe only once. Although Bošcović provides interesting pieces of evidence for this hypothesis, there still seem to be significant sets of evidence against this hypothesis. After carefully considering the relevant sets of data, this paper argues that the single probe hypothesis is empirically inadequate and has to be replaced by the multiple probe hypothesis which dictates that an expression can probe more than one time as long as there are more than one uninterpretable features requiring probing. It will be shown that this idea, coupled with the Greed type movement theory, can explain all the data adequately.
