초록

This paper illustrates that moving element driven approach (MD) has a look-ahead problem as well, even though it was proposed by Bokovi (2007, 2011) to avoid the look-ahead problem of target driven approach (TD) advanced by Chomsky (2000, 2001, 2004). Considering the validity of some important claims of MD, I argue that MD is not superior to TD at all. It is argued that Bokovi’s view that an unvalued uninterpretable Case feature is a trigger of movement is conceptually problematic in that it induces a vacuous movement in the case of Case checking by prepositions and complementizers. It is further argued that the single probe system of movements has to be replaced with the double probe system on both conceptual and empirical grounds. These arguments do not imply, however, that TD is better than MD, because TD has the several problems pointed out in this paper.
