In total, 148 compliment speech acts were collected. The data were investigated in terms of syntactic structure, lexical feature, semantic organization, compliment topic, compliment response strategies, and contextual organization. The major findings were as follows: 1) in the syntactic construct, the textbooks didn’t reflect compliment expressions native English speakers were likely to utter; 2) compliments were reflected improperly in lexical aspect; 3) semantic construct were quite well represented; 4) the topic of “ability” was most frequently appeared in the textbooks; 5) about 30% of compliment responses were categorized as “no acknowledgement”; and 6) the textbooks have greatly improved in general.
