초록
The extension of the progressive aspect has been widely discussed as a feature of non-native varieties of English as representing either structural variation or semantic extension to new contexts. Responding to calls to approach varieties of English as a native (ENL), second (ESL) and foreign (EFL) language in an integrated way, this paper reports on a case study of the progressive aspect in English used in Korea and Japan which belong to the Expanding Circle. This study analyzed approximately 1260 tokens of progressive in three registers: real time online discussion, academic writing and news reportage. The results were compared with the data from ENL and ESL varieties from van Rooy (2014) and Edwards (2014). The results show no strict divide between the ESL varieties and English used in Korea and Japan, which displayed characteristics of both EFL and ESL. The results also reveal that the progressive is used more frequently in spoken register than written one.
