This study aims to examine the efficiency(past), quality(present), and potential(future) of online machine translation. In order to achieve this purpose, this paper firstly reviews the historical development of machine translation and its specified limits from the perspective of pragmatics and sociolinguistics. Then, it conducts the error analysis of Korean-English translation of three different online machine translators (Google, Papago, Kakao) in a text, specifically 54 expressions and sentences whose meanings are socially and culturally constructed. The result shows that an online machine translator is rapidly and steadily developing to consider grammatical and syntactical features in translation, but it still has limitations determined by sociocultural interpretation and use of a language. Specifically, the errors for homonym, polysemy, expressions using literate and poetic license, media sources, and jargons occur relatively high and lead to misinterpretation. Based on the findings, this paper highlights the ways to overstep the limits of an online machine translation service for natural meaning-conversion and higher quality translation.
