Abstract
This paper analyzed the various sizes of Korean lexicons (39 lexicons ranging from 1,592 words to 101,804 words) in terms of phonological word-similarity in the framework of network theory. 101,804 words were selected to make these lexicons from Kang and Kim(2009). Phonological neighborhood network(PNN) for each lexicon were constructed and each PNN’s giant component(GC), average shortest path length(ASPL), average clustering coefficient(ACC), and assortative mixing by degree(AMD) were measured and then the results were compared with those of several languages presented in previous studies. It was shown that Korean PNN shares some language-universal properties of PNN’s observed in other languages. Like in other languages, Korean PNN satisfied the requirements for being a small-world network. Besides these common properties, some language-particular properties were found in Korean PNN. The GC size of Korean PNN was relatively larger than those of some other languages’ ones. In the value-curves of GC size, ASPL, and AMD based on the lexicon size, Korean exhibited the rise and fall shapes, which were not observed in other languages.
