Abstract
For the derivations and representations of related phrases and sentences, Chomsky (1995, 200, 2001) has proposed two different merges, i.e., external and internal merges. Nunes(1995, 1999) and Hornstein(2001), however, have exerted to propose the sideward merges which allow the movements among some subtrees in syntactic component. The proposal of this paper is that the sideward merge is not peculiar from the external and internal merges, which can be explained as merging operations with the appropriate derivational conditions for the PF and LF interfaces as well as for the language external A-P and C-I systems. Focusing on the sideward merge operations with some related structures, some effects on structural derivations within minimalist theory are considered, i.e., eliminating construal theories like control or binding as well as the some dubious lexical items like PRO, O-operators in some particular structures.
