A Constraint-based Analysis of Non-constituent Coordination Constructions

Abstract
The previous studies have been focused on how to analyze the coordination constructions where the coordinated expression is clearly identified as a constituent. Accordingly, these studies could not provide an appropriate analysis to the coordinated constructions where the conjunction 'and/or' coordinates the two expressions which do not form a constituent. Blevins & Sag(1996) suggested that the examples so called conjunction reduction constructions be analyzed with VP conjunction instead of transformational approach or non-empty category analysis. There, however, could be a problem to regard a category 'Kim a pen' as VP which has no gap in any conjunct against the general concept of NP. The purpose is to study such examples as Non-constituent constructions with Non-constituent Coordination Rule which is suggested in this paper to deal with such constructions. This rule is subject to the HPSG principles such as The Gap Principle and Head-Filler Rule.
