The purposes of the present study were to present a teaching model for self-directed English learning through a blended learning application and to examine the effectiveness of the teaching model on self-directed English learning and writing proficiency in a 6th grade student population in comparison to using the general method. For this study, two classes with similar proficiency levels from Y private elementary school in Seoul were chosen by pre-test as the research samples. The two groups took lessons for a 7-week period. The experimental group took lessons in self-directed English writing through a blended learning model while the control group did the lessons using the general method. The results of this study indicated that there was a significant difference in improving self-directed English learning through blended learning as opposed to the general method. However, in writing proficiency skills this did not manifest itself statistically.
