초록
The purpose of this paper is to reconsider conversion in German and Dutch within the framework of Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky, 1993; McCarthy & Prince, 1995). Denominal verbs in German should comply with all the constraints on the form of verbs, while those in Dutch are not subject to any constraints. In this paper, I show that the difference between the two languages follows from the relatively different rankings of the faithfulness constraint Base-Identity with reference to the relevant phonological markedness constraints on verbs. Specifically, I assert that in German, the phonological constraints on verbs should be ranked higher than Base-Identity, while in Dutch the ranking should be reversed. I show that with the above assumptions, all the predictions about conversion in German and Dutch are borne out.
