Abstract
This study investigated the efficacy of extra trunk exercise (ETE) in improving balance, gait ability, and trunk control in patients with chronic stroke. This study was designed as a pilot randomized clinical trial and included 30 patients with chronic stroke who were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG) (n=15) and a control group (CG) (n=15). Patients in the EG received conventional physical therapy combined with ETE for 30 min, whereas patients in the CG received only conventional physical therapy. The intervention was performed in both groups for 30 min 5 days a week for 6 weeks (30 sessions). The primary outcomes of balance and gait ability were assessed using the Tinetti scale, and trunk control was assessed using the trunk impairment scale. Assessment was performed before and after the 6-week intervention period. Both groups showed significant improvements in balance, gait ability, and trunk control after the intervention.Notably, the EG showed a significant difference in balance, gait ability, and trunk control compared with the CG. This study indicates that ETE effectively improves balance, gait ability, and trunk control in patients with chronic stroke and that ETE application makes this more efficient.
