Abstract
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIRS) is newly highlighted-optical neuroimaging method that detects the hemodynamic response to cortical activation according to brain activities such as cognitive or motor performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of practical application of fNIRS in the field of rehabilitation science, compared with functional MRI(fMRI). We recruited twenty healthy subjects, who were randomly allocated into fNIRS group(n=10) and fMRI group(n=10). fNIRS and fMRI were scanned, and standardized Talairach coordinates and hemodynamic response (oxy-hemoglobin/ voxel counts) were analyzed respectively, while subjects performed hand motor task with 1Hz of flexion-extension movement. As results of data analysis, primary sensorimotor cortex was focally activated in all of fNIRS and fMRI. However, no significant difference was observed in standardized Talairach coordinates with an x-y-z axis. Therefore, Talairach coordinates of fNIRS during hand motor performance was the same as that of fMRI, which had high reliability and excellent spatial resolution. fNIRS is non-invasive neuroimaging technique, which did not affect to motion artifact and take an advantage of easy to move. So, we expect that fNIRS have a great possibility of human movement study in terms of balance and gait performance, and so forth.
