Abstract
The purpose of this study is to establish the test-retest reliability as well as the validity of the Fall Efficacy Scale-Swedish version (FES-S) that translated into Korean in chronic stroke patients. The subjects participated in this study were 73 patients(48 male, 25 female) with hemiparesis being able to walk independently. Fallers were identified and patients answered the question in the FES-S. Two independent raters evaluated FES. The FES was administered in 2 testing sessions 3 days apart. The FES reliability was determined by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC 2,1) and Kappa coefficient, Cronbach’s alpha by internal consistency. Validity was examined by correlating the FES score to the depression(Geriatric Depression Scale, GDS), balance(Berg Balance Scale, BBS), mobility(Timed Up & Go test, TUG), basic activity daily living(Modified Barthel Index, MBI). The overall test-retest reliability of the total score was high ICC(2,1)=.972(95% CI=.955~.982), the Kappa coefficient=.74~.93 and Cronbach’s alpha value was .959. The ICC of the individual items ranged from .881 to .979 (95% CI=.815~.987) and item-to-total correlations were all significant, ranging from .67 to .88(p<.01). The total score of FES correlated with age(r=.41), frequency of falls(r=.49), GDS(r=.41), BBS(r=-.45), TUG(r=.54,), and MBI score(r=-.47)(p<.01). The Korean version of FES appears to be a reliable and valid method for measuring fear of falling. It may be useful clinical tool for measure fear of falling in stroke patients.
