Abstract

This study was to investigate the effect of treadmill walking and bilateral rhythmic auditory stimulation on gait in patients with stroke. 24 people with stroke were participated for this study. Gait parameters(stride length, step length, stride time, step time, cadence) and temporal & spatial gait symmetry were measured while participants walked on a treadmill at 3 experimental belt speed(ie, slow, comfortable and fast) with and without bilateral rhythmic auditory stimulation. After a period of familiarization to bilateral rhythmic auditory stimulation and different belt speed, the participants walked on treadmill for five minutes. Experiments were conducted randomly in six different conditions during two days. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Stride length and step length on nonparetic side were increased significantly with bilateral rhythmic auditory stimulation in all belt speed(p < .05). 2. Stride length, step length on paretic side and nonparetic side are the longest at comfortable belt speed on treadmill waking with bilateral rhythmic auditory stimulation. But, there are not significant differences among three groups. 3. Spatial and temporal symmetry were improved with bilateral rhythmic auditory stimulation. And these were the highest at comfortable belt speed. These results suggest that treadmill walking with bilateral rhythmic auditory stimulation appears to be a promising therapeutic intervention for improving gait and controling gait parameters in patients with stroke.
