Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cognitive task balance training using BIORescue Program on static balance, dynamic balance and visual perception in the elderly. Forty-one participants (aged 65-85 years) were selected from a falling prevention class and were randomly allocated to two groups; 20 to the experimental group and 21 to the control group. The experimental group underwent training for 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week, for 8 weeks. Static balance (postural sway velocity), dynamic balance (Berg balance scale, Functional reach test, Timed “Up & Go” test, Limit of stability) and visual perception (Motor-free visual perception test) were measured pre- and post-training. The experimental group showed significant improvements in all measures. A significant improvement in static balance and dynamic balance were demonstrated within the experimental group(p<.05), but not in the control group. This study confirms that cognitive task balance training using BIORescue Program effectively improves postural balance and visual perception in elderly people.
