Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of changes in cognitive function on balance ability and visual reaction time in elderly women, also to determine their relationship. Twenty five elderly female volunteers aged over 65 were participated and were divided into control and experimental groups by Korean mini-mental state examination (K-MMSE) score. Also activities of daily living, balance ability were measured as their physical functions. Each item of physical function and reaction time to visual stimuli were measured to determine their relationship with cognitive function. Korean instrumental activities of daily living (K-IADL) and balance ability with eyes closed were significantly decreased in experimental group than control group (p<.05). Moreover, visual reaction time was delayed in experimental group, however it was not significant between the groups. Whereas, the error in discrimination reaction task was increased in experimental group than control group (p<.05). In correlation analysis, as the K-MMSE score increased, K-IDAL was independent (p<.01), balance ability was intact (p<.01), as well as discriminative reaction time was fast and accurate (p<.05). Thus, it suggests that changes in cognitive function might affect the balance ability in elderly women, which is directly related to ADL. Also attenuation in cognitive function thought to be presumably related to a delay in reaction time.
