Abstract

The purpose of this study is to review the previous studies related to book discussions at schools, and to provide implications for teacher education and suggested areas for future research. To achieve this, we focused on book discussion goals, text selection, students’ interactions, teachers’ support and assessment. Book discussions can be categorized into different types according to participants’ stances toward a text, discussion methods, and the authorities that teachers and students share. When selecting texts to be used in book discussions, elements in the text itself, as well as readers and classroom context, should be considered. Based on these, teachers and their students together need to select a suitable text in collaboration. In order for book discussions to be successful, teachers need to consider the number, diversity and sociality of participants in a group. In book discussions, teachers can play various roles, such as facilitators, participants, mediators and active listeners. The studies of teachers’ discourse moves will help teachers purposefully select and use instructional dialogues, and these will serve as a tool for researchers to analyze some problems arising during book discussions. Finally, some previous researches suggested authentic assessments to assess book discussions but few relevant researches can be found. Thus, researches related to authentic assessments need to be carried out in the future.
