초록
This paper examined the activities and characteristics of journalist organizations in Daegu/Gyeongbuk area during the 1920s. First of all, during the first half of the 20s, newspapers written in Japanese constituted the mainstream in areas with big Japanese populations, such as Daegu and Gimcheon. And Japan's policy propagating a friendly Chosun-Japan relationship was reflected in these newspapers. However, other newspapers published in Korean pointed out the problems of a ‘Japanizing’ Chosun, and offered some criticism. During the mid-1920s, organizations of Korean journalists actively emerged. This was partly attributable to socialism. Among the changes, the concept of ‘common people’ became the most notable. The influence of newspapers written in Japanese, on the other hand, began to dwindle. During this time, the journalist organizations raised the awareness of social problems in each area, and defended the interests of the common people. Toward the late-1920s, the journalist organizations were active in the National United Front Movement. As a result, subsidiary organizations such as Gyeongbuk Youth Union and Gyeongbuk Jorunalists' Alliance emerged on the municipal level. This also provided the basis for establishments and activities of regional bodies of Sin'ganhoe. Conclusively, the journalist organizations in Daegu/Gyeongbuk area since the mid-1920s opened up the space for legitimate social activities. The increase in number of subscribers to Korean-written newspapers is also noteworthy. Moreover, the huge socioeconomic gap between Koreans and Japanese people were highlighted as social problems. As such, the journalistic activities by these journalist organizations resulted in a social effect that awoke the reality of Chosun.
