The article looks at the politics of memory among the Koreans during the Soviet period and later, who had experienced a forcible deportation in 1937. At first, their memories were repressed by the authorities from the outset of migration from the Far Eastern province, and thus Koreans tried to find a true self and communal identity by re-configuring their concealed memories. However, when the Perestroika was launched with the rise of Gorbachev in the middle of 1980s, they began to leak sporadically and the drizzle soon changed into a deluge with the great advance of reform policy. The restored memories often competed and made conflict with each other and also provided Koreans with an opportunity to heal the pain of the tragic past. Now Koreans could accept and overcome what they had been forced to hide during the previous long periods. In this whole process, the politics of memory was in action and connected Koreans into their past, present, and the future.
