초록
For approximately 30 years after the opening of the port in 1876, Western civilization was genuinely flooding and it was also when the order of inner Joseon dynasty and East Asia surrounding Joseon was collapsing with transition to capitalist system or modern nations. Also, that period was a huge shift of civilization where Western civilization was substituting ‘Oriental Civilization’ that has bases on Confucianism by prevailing them. Throughout the process, various independent plans from various influential people were sought with different ways by the Joseon society to deal with the Western civilization. One of the theories that intellectuals with traditional reasoning based on Confucianism came up with to respond to Western civilization was Dongdo-Seogi Philosophies. It was the philosophy of accepting Seogi, the Western techniques and equipment that had Dongdo, which includes ideas, values, culture and customs of tradition, as its ‘model’. Also, Dongdo-Seogi philosophies had important meanings as the policy which provided logical reasons when Joseon dynasty government was pushing ahead the enlightenment policy after the opening of the port. Moreover, it has internal attitudes or awareness of not only the Oriental civilization that had privileged status of ‘universalism’ but also the Western civilization as well as the agony of ways to accept and adjust to the relationship of the both. In this essay, based on the research until now, Dongdo-Seogi Philosophies from 1880 to1984, when the acceptance of Western civilization or enlightenment policy with Dongdo as the ‘model’ was losing its meaning, will be studied. Also, the meaning and the idea of transition of the Dongdo-Seogi Philosophers within the controversy of ‘New school and old school’ will be approached from the context of realization of the relationship between the Oriental civilization and the Western civilization. Rather than exploring how modern Dongdo-Seogi Philosophy was, the focus will be on the concerns that people had that time to deal with prevailing Western civilization, what possibilities were there to aim as both civilizations were revitalized, and if there were, where the attainment would have been. Through this process, possibilities to newly understand the Dongdo-Seogi Philosophy will be looked at.
