West Gando(西間島) in China was one of the regions where Korean independence movement was very strongly done in the early 1910s. Many Korean independence leaders migrated into West Gando since the late 1900s, and made the bases for Korean independence army against Imperial Japan there. In West Gando, the most known famous cities were Hwe'in-hyeon(懷仁縣), Tong'hwa-hyeon(通化縣), and Yuha-hyeon(柳河縣). Andong-hyeon(安東縣) was also a city in West Gando, where was very closed to Korea enough to arrive if going across a river, called Am'lok-gang river(鴨綠江). After the Second Korean-Japanese Agreements(1905), many Korean leaders moved into West Gando, part of them stayed at Andong. The city was especially developed in commerce. Not a few Korean were engaged in commerce and amassed their fortune at that time, and part of the profits were used in the independence movement. We need to pay attention to a shop Seong-shin-tae(誠信泰) in Andong. It was a shop to have three functions: generally as a shop to sell goods and as a inn, often secretly as a liaison office for the independence movement. The activity using Seong-shin-tae vitalized into Korean independence movement in southern Manchuria. Who were the founders and managers? What were the plans for the independence of Korea? And, what blocked the activities? Let's look into the activities of Seong-shin-tae in 1910s.
Abstract
