Focusing on Jeomchon Station on the Gyeongbuk Line, which opened in December 1924, this study analyzes the changes in the Mungyeong region due to the introduction of the railway. In terms of changes in the local transportation system, it examines the importance of Jeomchon Station and the reorganization of the local transportation network due to the specificity of its terminus, as well as the resulting changes in the strategies of road carriers. It also focuses on interregional conflicts over the extension line and the location of the station, and the resulting conflicts and responses, especially between Jeomchon-ri and its neighbors and Mungyeong-myeon. In doing so, it aims to analyze how local social relations in colonial spaces were reorganized and experienced conflict after the introduction of modern transportation, the railway.
Abstract
