초록

This paper aims to examine the historical sources of the Goryeo Section in the History of Jin. Compiled in 1344, a little over a year following its commencement, this book was assembled more than a century subsequent to the official end of the Jin dynasty. As a result, the compilers encountered a paucity of available sources, particularly concerning the sections that delve into the intricacies of the Jin dynasty's association with Goryeo. To surmount this obstacle, the compilers of the History of Jin resorted to three key sources: the Veritable Records of the Jin Dynasty, privately composed historical accounts by former Jin subjects in the immediate aftermath of its demise, and The Draft of History of Jin, finalized in 1264. Regrettably, none of these sources encompassed a specific section dedicated to Goryeo or the intricacies of Jin's interactions with it. Consequently, the Goryeo Section within the History of Jin was authored by imperial historians of Mongol Empire. Although the Goryeo section aligns with the content found in the Imperial Annals and the Chronological Tables of Diplomatic Events within the same volume, it diverges in terms of its level of detail and comprehensiveness. This disparity can be attributed to the shared reliance on a common source, the Veritable Records of the Jin Dynasty, yet the authors exercised discretion in their writing process, selectively determining which passages to incorporate or exclude. The Goryeo section presents a narrative that highlights the rise of the Jurchens as the dominant force over their former rulers, the Goryeo, attributing this outcome to their notable achievements. However, this narrative deviates from the reconstructed understanding of their relationship, as discerned from the History of Goryeo, not only in terms of fundamental facts but also in its overarching framework. Thus, it becomes evident that the compilation of the Goryeo section did not incorporate any sources originating from the Goryeo dynasty.
