Abstract

This study examined the characteristics of childhood ego and family romance in Son Gwang-seong's collection of essays, 『The Sea』. Son Gwang-seong's family romance begins and ends with his desire to return to his 'hometown' in the North, where his origins are. However, the sadness lies in the fact that the hometown mountains and rivers he dreams of are no longer 'that place' they once were, and there is no trace of the original meaning of the original meaning. Family narratives such as the Japanese colonial period, the Korean War, the death of his mother during his childhood, his separation from his sister-in-law and his older sister's care, and his move south with his older sister during the Hungnam evacuation are expressed in the form of the foundling, which is characteristic of family romance. In works such as 「Buffalo Paperweight」, the foundling desire to ‘disappear’ or escape the world of reality and ‘dream of a world of one’s own’ is reflected. This is expressed in the image of his mother that is fixed in his childhood self, or in visions of death. For him, mother always exists as a meaning that ‘disappears’ into a world ‘beyond reality’, that is, as ‘object a’. This symbolizes the subject’s anxiety and deficiency. For Son Gwang-seong, family romance serves as a core driving force of his childhood self.
