Abstract
This article focuses on the path of forensic medicine in Korea in the historical context after the liberation. During this period, forensic medicine in Korea experienced personnel and institutional changes. The first generation of Korean legal medicine doctors appeared, and the National Institute of Scientific Investigation provided them with a space of forensic activity. However, the academic foundation for forensic medicine education and research was not established until the 1950s. There was no medical college that inaugurated any department or institute for forensic medicine. Accordingly, a few first generation doctors including Choi Chin and Moon Gook-Jin gradually tried to establish a forensic institute, an affiliated department, society and journal. Since establishing the Soo Do Medical College Institute of Legal Medicine in 1964 forensic doctors conducted various activities such as popular writing, managing seminars, and supporting scientific investigation. As a result of these persistent efforts, the first department of forensic medicine and the Korean Society for Legal Medicine were established in 1976. However, these actions did not imply that the academic crisis after the liberation was completed overcome. Nevertheless, it is also clear that a series of practice of the first generation marked a significant turning point in Korean forensic medicine.
