Abstract

This study investigates Russia's second city, St. Petersburg. Specifically, it focuses on exploring perceived images of this city from Russia and external society. Its research medium is YouTube videos covering St. Petersburg in English and Russian languages. This study employed semantic network analysis, which allows implement quantitative analysis and qualitative interpretations, for finding out the images from the two sides. This study used NodeXL as a tool for data collection, analysis and visualisation of the results. The results show that there was no significant difference between Russia’s domestic and international perceived images of Saint Petersburg. The only difference is Russia perceived this city as a living space and international community does it as a tourist destination. However, when Russia’s current situation with Ukraine does not improve, the city will be isolated from international community which might negatively impact on its capacity as a global actor. Thus, this study calls for an appropriate action from Russia for overcoming a potential problem.
