Abstract

The study classified loneliness and social isolation based on mental health status, addressing issues that have recently gained attention. Targeting adults aged 20 and older, it assessed levels of loneliness and social isolation, and based on these findings, analyzed their relationship with mental health status (depression and suicidal ideation) to identify different types and examine their characteristics. The analysis revealed that 47.5% of respondents experience loneliness, with higher rates among individuals in their 30s and 40s. Additionally, loneliness and social isolation are more prevalent among single-person households than multi-person households, and men are more socially isolated than women. The analysis identified four groups based on mental health status in relation to loneliness and social isolation: the "loneliness group," "isolation group," "loneliness-depression group," and "isolation-depression group." By analyzing the impact of loneliness and social isolation on mental health for each type, the study highlights the need for tailored policy responses for each group. This research is significant in that it expands previous studies, which mainly focused on single-person households and young adults, by including a broader adult population. Based on the analysis, the study proposes customized support strategies tailored to each type of loneliness and social isolation among adults.
