Abstract

This study was conducted on the estimation of water demand of trees according to sap flow according to the growth period of evergreen broadleaf trees that continue to grow in winter. Daily sap flow gradually increased from 7:00 AM, reached the maximum value per hour around 12:00 PM, and gradually decreased after 12:00 PM, reaching the lowest value at 4:00 AM. This was determined to be due to the decrease in temperature and sol ar radiation, which are directly related to sap flow. Monthly sap flow steadily increased as temperature increased from May, when the survey began, to August, and reached the highest value in August and then gradually decreased. It was determined that the physiological activities of trees, such as photosynthesis and transpiration, were actively performed during the summer season due to the increase in sunlight hours and solar radiation, which led to an increase in temperature. As a result of comparing sap flow during rainy and non-rainy days, sap flow during non-rainy days tended to be higher than that during rainy days due to the increase in transpiration and water demand of trees. The average sap flow of trees was the highest during non-rainy days in August, and on rainy days, it decreased by about 20% compared to non-rainy days. In order to calculate the water demand of trees, the data of August, when tree growth is the most active, and January, when tree physiological activity slows down, were compared and examined. As a result, the average sap flow in August was 866.05 mL/day, which was about 13.5 times higher than the average sap flow in January, which was 64.23 mL/day. In August, which is the summer season, very active water movement occurs, sap flow decreases sharply in January, and only minimal water movement occurs during the winter.
