Abstract
This study examines volunteer gardeners who independently maintain and manage public gardens in Seoul, Korea, and explores how their activities contribute to the sustainability of these gardens. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten volunteer gardeners actively engaged in public garden maintenance, and the collected data were analyzed using the iterative comparative analysis method. The findings indicate that key motivations for participation include prior garden education, personal gardening experience, and a sense of fulfillment in sustaining self-created gardens. Additionally, social bonds among volunteers and their interaction with nature played a significant role in the continuity of their engagement, while relationships with public garden visitors further enhanced their sense of pride in gardening activities. However, frequent changes in the management entity led to communication breakdowns and inconsistencies in the support system, negatively impacting the sustainability of volunteer engagement. While positive recognition from garden visitors increased volunteer satisfaction, negative behaviors such as vandalism and plant theft adversely affected their experience. To ensure the long-term sustainability of volunteer gardening activities, structured educational programs should be provided not only on gardening techniques but also on the fundamentals of volunteerism. Based on these findings, this study seeks to propose strategies to promote sustained volunteer participation in public gardens.
