Abstract
Ecological wetlands provide important core habitats or shelters for wild animals, and various systems and projects are actively being implemented today to create them. In order for ecological wetlands to function properly, an appropriate area of open water, one of the components of wetlands, must be maintained. However, after ecological wetlands are created, the area of open water often decreases due to the spread of plants in the wetlands. This study aims to examine ways to secure open water by investigating existing ecological wetlands and to suggest directions for future research. To this end, the target sites were selected based on soil (bed material) and field surveys and orthophoto surveys and analyses were conducted. As a result, it was confirmed that the target sites with gravel were secured with an area of open water of more than 75% compared to other target sites and that vegetation did not spread to other areas. On the other hand, in the target sites without gravel, vegetation spread excessively and the area of open water decreased rapidly. Through this, it was confirmed that gravel can effectively secure open water when creating ecological wetlands. However, gravel placement was found to be effective only for plants that root in the soil, such as aquatic plants and floating plants, so it seems necessary to take measures to prevent the spread of floating plants that do not root in the soil. In future research, it is necessary to establish various guidelines for wetland creation and management and to explore new ways to secure open water.
