Abstract

What’s the meaning of the name of Dokdo(獨島) in the East Sea? Dokdo(獨島), a notational name written in Chinese characters, went by the name of Dokseom in Korea. Old maps of Korea had three types of dokdo: First, dokdo referred to jarshaped islands. This obviously does not correspond to Dokdo in the East Sea. Second, dokdo referred to separated scrap islands. Korean “동[doŋ]” means separated scrap, and it was sometimes written as “獨[dok]” in Chinese characters. Thus, small islands near the land or a big island could be described as “獨島.” This does not correspond to Dokdo either, as Dokdo is too big and too distant from the land or Ulleungdo(鬱陵島) to be considered as Dongseom. Third, dokdo meant stone islands. “독[tok]” is a dialect of “돌[tol],” meaning stones. The Proto-Korean of [tol] was [*turak] derived from Proto-Altaic *tiōl’a and related with Proto-Mongolian *turaɣu. Proto-Korean [*turak] changed to [*turk] by syncope in Old Korean and it changed to [tor(h)] in Middle Korean, and [tol] in Modern Korean. Each consonant in ending cluster could be expressed in Old Korean, but only one consonant could be expressed in Middle Korean. So [*turk] was pronounced as [tor] in Middle Korean, but in some regions it was pronounce as [tok]. This case corresponds to Dokdo. Thus, this paper asserts that “Stone Island[石島]” in 1900’s Royal Decree indicated Dokdo.
