Abstract

Among Japanese formal nouns the meaning and usage of 「mono」and 「koto」are very unique because they are contradicting, yet supporting, each other. The combination of 「mono」 and 「koto」with a conclusive suffix 「da」, which are 「monoda」 and 「kotoda」, creates similarity, not only for their composition, but also their usage. In addition, while Japanese recognize the difference between 「mono」 and 「koto」in substance with their indicating meaning and content, Koreans recognize them as the same concept or notional meaning of 「gos」. Consequently, the 「monoda」 and 「kotoda」 are very difficult expressions to apply appropriately to those students whose mother tongue is Korean. In order to resolve this concern, a thorough comprehensive analysis on the proper application of 「monoda」 and 「kotoda」is an inevitable step for Korean students studying Japanese. Therefore, this thesis examines a meaningful usage of 「monoda」 and 「kotoda」, and their distinctive characteristics. Based on this examination and its related results, it is confirmed that 「monoda」application is representing 「substit ution」 「character/status definition」 「natural character」 「requirment character」 「situation description」 「retrospection」 「admiration」 or 「reason」, while 「kotoda」 applications are indicating 「substitution」 「requirment character」 「admiration」 or 「command」
