Abstract
This study addresses the acquisition of L2 writing skills involved with an effective writing pedagogy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) programs for students in Korea. The study has two basic aims: first, to clarify a specific area of difficulty (i.e. writing quality) encountered by these students when attempting to write in standard English, and second, to propose pedagogical solutions to this problem. I argue that as an optimal solution to ongoing problems of writing among Korean EFL students, "Nouniness Squish" paradigm (Ross 1973) and L1 transfer can be a good facilitator for them to attain more refined linguistic competence. To carry out this objective, 44 undergraduates from a university in Korea were used as experimental subjects in two essay tests given during the fall semester in 2005. A paired samples (2-tailed) t-test demonstrated students, fluent or less fluent, were able to generate an essay with more complex, longer, and more nominalized texts in the posttest than they did in the pretest. Time restriction bore no close relations to overall proficiency between two tests. Despite a twenty-minute gap on two tests with no syntactic constraints, there was no striking textual refinement for two groups in the pretest. Rather students were of more proficiency in the posttest despite a reduced writing time. The correlation between the L1 and L2 while generating and developing ideas showed that L1 was a good encoding process to better cope with writers' cognitive constraints.
