기존 연구에 의하면, 주어 생략에 관한 가장 중요한 요인으로서 모호성 조건을 들 수 있다. 즉, 주어가 생략될 때, 모호성이 초래되지 않는다면, 그 주어는 생략될 수 있다는 것이다. 그러나, 실제로는 모호성을 초래하지 않는다고 해서, 항상 주어가 생략이 가능한 것은 아니다.본 논문은 주어가 생략될 때 모호성을 초래하지 않는다 하더라도, 대조 요소이면 생략될 수 없다는 것을 한국어, 일본어 및 영어의 여러 관련 현상을 통하여 밝히고 있다. 그리고, 요인에 따라 두 종류의 대조 요소를 제시하고 있다. 하나는 주어가 대조 요소가 되도록 요구하는 강한 상황적 문맥적 요인 있는 경우이고, 다른 하나는 화자의 자의적인 의도에 따라, 주어가 대조 요소가 될 수도 있고, 아닐 수도 있는 경우이다. 전자의 경우, ‘담화적 대조 요소’로서, 주어의 생략이 허락되지 않는다. 반면, 후자의 경우, 주어가 ‘의도적 대조 요소’로서 생략되지 않고 나타날 수도 있고, 그렇지 않을 경우는 생략될 수도 있다. 즉, 대조적 의미를 나타내기 위해서 화자가 의도적으로 주어를 생략하지 않고 표현할 수도 있고, 그렇지 않을 경우에는 주어를 생략할 수도 있다. 본 논문에서 논의된 내용은 주어 생략 현상에 대한 극히 적은 부분을 다룬 것이며, 시작에 불과한 것이다. 앞으로, 많은 다양한 자료에 대한 관찰을 통하여, 아직도 많은 부분이 의문으로 남아있는 주어 생략 현상을 밝히는 데 본 연구가 도움이 되기를 바란다.
Abstract
It has generally been said that in Korean and Japanese the subject of the sentence is optionally deletable. There have been some attempts to account for the matter of subject ellipsis, but no clear answer has yet been found. According to previous studies, subjects which do not raise ambiguity in a given context can be deleted. However, there are many cases where such subjects are not allowed to be deleted. We try to show how some phenomena of subject ellipsis in Korean, Japanese, and English, which have not be dealt with seriously, or ignored in previous studies, can be explained by the discourse-pragmatic concept ‘contrast.’ This study also suggests that there are two kinds of contrasted elements, discourse-contrasted element and intention- contrasted element.
