Abstract
This study focuses on the pedagogical significance of phrasal verbs and the role that corpus linguistics can play in establishing a solid criteria for teaching phrasal verbs in EFL education. The study starts with an argument for the necessity of “systematic” teaching of phrasal verbs. It then reports two findings from a corpus analysis of phrasal verbs taught in an EFL textbook that is used for senior middle-school students in Korea. The textbook fails to match the frequency distribution of phrasal verbs found in the two sub-corpora of the WordBanks Online, the National Public Radio Broadcasts corpus and the US Books corpus. The textbook also fails to present some of the major functions of each phrasal verb and/or to provide appropriate contexts in which they occur. The study concludes with a discussion of some pedagogical implications of the findings.
