초록
This paper examines word-initial onset and word-final coda types cross-linguistically. The claim in this paper is that in this quantitative study, CV and VC type is the most basic onset and coda types in word-initial and word-final positions, respectively. Among phonological factors, the number of consonants and the tone feature are the predicting factors for the presence and the position of consonant clusters in general. In this qualitative study, for Max 1 onset and coda consonants, consonants in word-initial and word-final positions do not appear to follow the accepted hierarchy. In the languages studied in this paper, stops and fricatives tend to be permitted in word-initial position and sonorant sounds are permitted in word-final position. In both positions, affricates are phonemes least likely to occur. For Max 2 onset and coda consonants, there is a symmetrical relation for onset and coda types between word-initial onset and word-final coda positions.
