초록
This paper aims to classify the double genitive construction into three subtypes and examine their semantics. The most coherent semantic analysis of the indefinite double genitive is the partitive hypothesis. I have found out that (i) indefinite double genitives are semantically equivalent to partitive constructions. (ii) The presence of a relative clause allows a definite double genitive to be interpreted partitively, as the referent is not interpreted as a unique item, but rather as a specific item picked out of a larger set. (iii) Unlike the indefinite and definite constructions, a partitive interpretation is not available for the majority of demonstrative double genitives. The demonstrative double genitive picks out unique entities, items which cannot be construed as proper subparts of a larger whole. This means that, in general, the partitive hypothesis will not be applicable to the demonstrative construction. Three suggestions(i.e., focus, familiarity, and emotion) have been put forward to explain the different nature of the demonstrative construction. (iv) Partitivity does not arise through the preposition of, but can be determined by contextual factors
