초록
This paper classifies relatives in English into four subtypes: (ⅰ) restrictive, (ⅱ) nonrestrictive, (ⅲ) amount and (ⅳ) headless relatives, and provide finer-grained representations of them at the syntax-semantics interface. We particularly focus on reconstruction effects of relative wh-pronouns and head nouns in the different subtypes of relatives and investigate how /why they are structured as they should be at the interface. We take a hybrid approach to these subtypes of relatives, adopting both relative wh- pronoun and relative head noun movement hypotheses. The up-shot of the discussion in this paper is that what is reconstructed in the relative clause and its edge differs across the subtypes of relatives. In restrictive relatives either relative wh-pronoun or relative head noun is reconstructed, whereas in nonrestrictive relatives only relative wh-pronoun is. In degree relatives only relative head noun is reconstructed, but in headless relatives relative wh-pronoun is reconstructed.
