초록

This paper examined Korean EFL students' knowledge of the shades of meaning in synonyms particularly in terms of their connotations. Forty-four first-year undergraduates took a word connotations test, in which they were asked to identify the connotations of the target words by choosing one of the following options: positive, neutral, negative. I then interviewed 23 students to find out what would pose difficulties in understanding the shades of meaning between synonyms. The test results revealed that quite a few students had an inadequate understanding of the connotations of some basic words. Student interviews showed that most of the students have not been encouraged to take an interest in what might be called the depth of meaning of synonyms. It was also found that students' insufficient understanding of the shades of meaning in synonyms was partly attributable to using thesauruses that fail to give genuine help with synonyms.
