초록
Harmonic Serialism (HS), a derivational version of OT, achieves optimality in a gradual, local, and consistent mode. Unlike parallel OT hinged upon globalism, serial OT allows a step-wise derivation through the multiple passes of Gen and Eval loop, which guarantees local optimality. Targeting the data of Korean vowel umlaut involving dialectal variation where general Gyeongsang Korean (GSK) prefers umlaut while conservative Seoul Korean (SK) disfavors umlaut, HS provides a new insight that dialectal difference in umlaut is closely pertinent to different harmony achievement processes. Given the HS's basic architecture of gradualness and harmonic improvement, maximal harmony in GSK is realized via a gradual path while SK achieves optimality via globalism
