The purpose of this study is to examine the semantic properties of Figure-Ground organization and apply these concepts to the analysis of syntactic structures in English. Talmy's (2000a: 311-344) Figure-Ground distinction explains an asymmetrical prominence in linguistic expressions. He focuses mostly on the visual and psychological aspects, not on the syntactic aspects. Through examining the relations between the cognitive conceptualizations and grammatical realizations, we can divide syntactic components into Figure and Ground: a subject or an object serves as Figure, and a PP modifier or a subject/object complement serves as Ground. In addition, this study provides a unified account of different types of grammatical functions in terms of Figure and Ground.
