초록
An expression such as let alone is peripheral. However, since this expression has grammatical characteristics which it shares with others, this should be examined. The pathway of change of let alone is studied in terms of grammaticaliztion. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, we trace the syntactic configuration diachronically. With the help of the British National Corpus, some syntactic tendencies of let alone are checked synchronically. The let alone construction from parataxis to hypotaxis goes through a cline of clause combining. In addition, the syntactic change of let alone is explained by grammaticalization principles such as coalescence and fixation. In the course of meaning changes, emotional and attitudinal stance are marked. Also, we discuss the status of let alone compared to other lexemes such as suppose revealing the similar tendencies. We also look into the form and meaning of leave alone and much less, along with let alone.
