College Student Perceptions on the Effects and Necessity of TOEIC Classes as Liberal Arts Education Courses

This paperaims to examine the effects and necessity of TOEIC classes as liberalarts education courses. The research was initiated based on data fromD University, and expanded specifically by collecting more data froma questionnaire from 107 students as well as interviews from 18students. The findings revealed that TOEIC classes had meaningfuleffects on students' listening and reading skills. However, the positiveeffects did not extend to speaking and writing because TOEIC classescontained mostly repetitive practices of listening and reading strategieswithin insufficient speaking and writing activities. 37.4% of the studentssurveyed considered TOEIC courses to be necessary and helpful interms of their economic status and easy access to the courses. On theother hand, 51.4% of the students also recognized the importance ofthe TOEIC, but pointed out its reliability and validity as a measuringtool of communicative competency. They emphasized that liberal artseducation should provide diverse courses of in-depth and inspiringtraining which encourages students' academic motivation.
