Abstract

This paper argues a derivational process of Spanish pseudo-resultatives based on Talmy(1991, 2000)'s proposal of verbal lexicalization process. Pseudo-resultative predicate is closely related to main verb in its meaning and its form. Starting from the fact that the existent syntactic analyses have not provided a satisfactory explanation for the mentioned construction, I propose that it is useful to apply a verb-framed language's lexicalization pattern in which result/path is incorporated into the main verb to an analysis of Spanish pseudo-resultative predicates. I claim that various properties of pseudo-resultative predicates classified into two types, that is, cognate predicates and hyponymous predicates, can be naturally explained by a lexical-syntactic approach proposed in this paper.
