Abstract
Based on the Relevance-Theoretic approach, this paper aims to make a pragmatic account of analysing and explicating some cases of collaboration by metaphor and irony, which occur in the process of ordinary language communication. While metaphor works at the conceptual domain and depends upon inferring the similarity between two different entities or experiences (Lakoff and Johnson 1980), irony demands the ability to infer another’s intention or belief (Sperber and Wilson 1981, 1995). Due to this distinct linguistic difference between metaphor and irony, most antecedent pragmatic researches have dealt with them in a respective way. Sometimes, however, metaphor and irony are conjoined by a connective (e.g., but or instead) in an explicit or implicit way and cooperate with each other in order to bring about successful communication which satisfies the expectation of optimal relevance.
