Abstract
This research has acoustically analyzed the formant frequencies of the vowel [·] and other vowels in the Jeju dialect in order to reveal the acoustic value of the former vowel in relation to the other vowels. It concludes that its acoustic value is so different from its similar vowels such as [a], [o] or [ə] that it is a distinctive vowel separate from the other vowels in the Jeju dialect. In addition, it shows that the vowel [·] in the Jeju dialect has the phonetic value of a mid rounded back vowel on the basis of its acoustic analysis and therefore should be represented as [ɔ] rather than [ɒ] in the IPA system.
