신체화에 기초한 의미 확장의 특성 연구

초록

이상에서 신체화에 기초한 의미 확장의 특성을 의미 확장의 원리에 기초하여 사전에서의 신체어 기술 양상과 의미 확장 양상 및 해석에 대해서 논의하였다. 이제까지 살펴본 바를 간추려 이 글을 마무리하기로 한다. 첫째, 신체화는 의미 작용, 즉 추상적인 사고 과정이 우리 몸의 신체적 체험에서 출발된다는 인식의 전환으로서, 그 중 신체어는 의미 확장의 중심이다. 둘째, 신체화에 기초한 의미 확장의 기제에는 영상도식, 개념적 환유와 은유, 범주적 은유가 있다. 그 중 신체어의 의미 확장은 주로 개념적 환유와 은유에 의해 수행된다. 셋째, 국어의 신체어와 관련된 어휘항목은 사전마다 합리적이고 일관된 기준 없이 동음이의어 중심으로 기술되어 있다. 이에 대해 신체어와 관련된 어휘항목을 다의적 의미 확장으로 파악해야 하며, 그 확장 순서는 신체어에 가까운 범주에서 먼 범주로 기술하는 것이 타당하다. 넷째, 주요 신체어 21개는 ‘동물, 식물, 사물, 공간, 시간, 수량, 추상’의 7개 범주로 의미가 확장된다. 그 중 ‘머리’는 7개, ‘목, 고개, 손’은 6개, ‘얼굴, 눈, 입, 어깨, 등, 발, 살’은 5개, ‘코, 귀, 턱, 심장, 허리, 배, 뼈’는 4개, ‘가슴, 다리’는 3개, ‘이’는 2개의 의미 범주에 적용된다. 또한 의미 범주 별로 그 확장 양상의 폭은 ‘동물>사물·추상>공간>식물>수량>시간’의 순으로 많이 나타난다. 다섯째, 국어 신체어의 의미 확장 양상은 범주적 은유의 방향을 따른다기보다는 ‘신체어’를 중심으로 직접적인 연관성을 유지하고 있음이 드러났다. 특히 신체어의 의미 확장 과정에서 ‘머리’는 위치와 관련하여 의미 연쇄의 확장 양상을 보여 준다. 요컨대 신체어를 중심으로 한 의미 확장은 국어에 매우 활성화되어 있으며, 이 논의 과정에서 다의어에 대한 새로운 인식, 의미 확장에 대한 우리 겨레의 인지와 사고 경향을 파악할 수 있다. 또 이 논의 결과는 다의어의 이해, 사전 편찬 및 언어교육에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study, which is based upon examination of Korean dictionaries, and other corpora, is to explore meaning extension in the Korean language, from the viewpoint of experientialism, based on embodiment. There are five findings. First, embodiment is an abstract thinking process originating from our bodily experiences. Second, the meaning extension mechanisms based on embodiment are image schemata, conceptual metonymy and metaphor, and categorial metaphor. Third, related lexical items are described in Korean dictionaries on the basis of homonymy, without consistent rules. Fourth, words representing body parts are extended semantically into seven categories. Fifth, the extension of these words maintains a direct relation, rather than taking a categorical metaphor. In view of these findings, this study concludes that Korean lexical items representing body parts should take a polysemic meaning extension, progressing from words closely related to those further away.
