초록
In discourse analysis of news discourse, language plays a pivotal role in making ideologies and perspectivesmore explicit and salient, This is based on the assumption that mediadiscourse represents ideology as well as a set of facts. This papershows how language shapes news discourse, based on the news textsof the 2013 U.S. federal government shutdown. We analyzed linguisticfeatures of news texts in the New York Times and Yonhap News, onthe basis of the result from a thematic approach and a key wordapproach. The American newspaper heavily reported how it affectedAmericans financially and economically, while the Korean media outletfocused on the effects on Korea’s economy and financial market. Thus, we strongly claim that language represents different ideologiesembedded in news texts for the same news event. The ideologicaldifferences were statistically proved to be significant.
