초록

This paper attempts to illustrate how appearance-noun moyang evolves from a full lexical noun into a defective noun nominalizer, and further into a modality- marking nominalizer from a grammaticalization perspective. The primary function of defective-noun-based nominalizer moyang is referential in nature. However, defective noun moyang also develops extended, non- referential functions that include diverse functional markers such as conjecture and prediction. Furthermore, such functions conveyed by moyang also carry various epistemic moods or stances in terms of their uses. These epistemic meanings embedded in its functions are manifested as conviction, self-assurance, and mitigation. Focusing on the diversity of functional behaviors carried by the noun, this paper examines a nominalization phenomenon in appearance-noun moyang, in particular, the strategies deployed in the formation of niminalization processes formed by the defective noun nominalizer.
