Abstract
It has been argued that direct object DPs are transparent domains for subextraction. Therefore, it is expected that subextraction from subject DPs is also possible in unaccusative/passive constructions. However, it is worth noting that there are examples of unaccusative/passive construction in which subextraction from its base-generated subject is impossible. Moreover, there are examples in which the extraction of wh-phrase, focus element, etc. contained in unaccusative/passive subject located in a derived position is allowed. In this paper, the derivational process applied in the extraction out of unaccusative/passive subjects is based on Chomsky’s (2013, 2015) labeling algorithm and the concept of feature sharing. I argue that subextraction is determined whether feature sharing occurs or not between extracted element and subject DP.
